Lost Your Dog's Vaccination Card?

Ring your vet. The practice holds the clinical record of every vaccination they have given, and can normally reprint a history or issue a replacement card, often the same day and sometimes for a small fee. The card in your drawer was always a copy — the authoritative record has been on their system all along.

What to ask for

Ask for a printed vaccination history rather than just "a new card". A history gives you dates, products and batch numbers for everything they have administered, which is what a boarding kennel, a groomer or a new practice actually needs. A blank replacement card with only the most recent entry filled in tells nobody very much.

If the dog has been to more than one practice

This is where it gets awkward. Each practice only holds what it did itself. A dog who moved house twice may have three partial histories and no single complete one. You will need to ring each practice in turn, and it helps enormously to know roughly when the dog was registered where.

Rescue dogs are harder still. The rescue may hold pre-adoption records, and it is worth asking even years later.

What a kennel usually wants

Boarding kennels and daycares set their own requirements, so ring ahead rather than assume. Broadly they are looking to see that the core vaccinations are current, and many ask separately about kennel cough with a minimum notice period before the stay. Leave it to the week before and the answer may simply be no.

Stopping it happening again

A single paper card has three failure modes at once: it gets lost, it gets wet, and it only exists where it physically is. None of those are solved by being more careful.

While you wait
